Movie theatre business grew in 2024, but still short of pre-pandemic highs: StatCan
OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says movie theatre business grew in 2024 but still hadn't reached its pre-pandemic peaks. Every two years, the agency releases a look at the state of movie theatres. Its report for 2024 showed operating revenues hit $1.6 billion last year, up 12 per cent from 2022. Statistics Canada says that marked a rebound from COVID-era restrictions, but still fell 13.1 per cent below the record of $1.9 billion seen in 2018. Theatre attendance was also stagnating, the agency says, at roughly two-thirds the levels seen six years earlier. Cineplex reports $2.2M Q2 loss, revenue up 30.5 per cent from year ago

The movie theatre company says its loss amounted to three cents per diluted share for the quarter ended June 30. The result compared with a loss of $21.4 million or 33 cents per diluted in the same quarter last year. Revenue for the quarter totalled $361.8 million, up from $277.3 million a year earlier. Theatre attendance amounted to 11.6 million, up from 8.7 million. Cineplex says it set all-time quarterly records for box office per patron at $13.68 and concession per patron at $10.04.
